Healthy Eating While Traveling: Simple Tips to Stay Energised on the Go

Traveling can be exciting, but it often means being away from your usual routine, which can make eating well a challenge. Whether you're on a road trip, flying to a new destination, or camping in the great outdoors, it’s still possible to nourish your body without stress. Here’s how I stay energised and make mindful food choices when I’m away from home!

PACK SNACKS

(for roadtrips, camping and flying)

Instead of relying on airport food or servo snacks, I always pack some easy, travel-friendly options. Some of my go-to snacks include:

MAKE CAMPING MEALS EASY WITH A LITTLE PREP

When we go camping, I try to prep as much food as possible beforehand, so all we have to do is reheat or cook up the basics—like eggs and sausages for breakfast. It makes meals so much easier and means more time relaxing (or adventuring)!

Here are some of my go-to pre-made camping meals that are both delicious and super handy:

  • Curry + rice

  • Chicken soup

  • Fritters, fish cakes or beef patties (served with a quick and easy salad)

  • Roast chicken or lamb with veggies or salad

  • GF wraps + fillings

  • Fried rice (a great way to use up leftover veggies!)

  • Slow cooked lamb shanks with veggies and rice

And for quick, low-effort cooking, I bring: eggs, additive free sausages and bacon, zucchini (fried in ghee with salt and pepper is so yummy). I also pack easy add-ons like salad ingredients, homemade sauerkraut, pickles, and condiments (sauces, mayo, pesto, etc.) to add flavour without the fuss.

A little prep goes a long way when camping—because let’s be real, no one wants to spend hours cooking when they could be enjoying the great outdoors!

PRIORITISE HYDRATION

When we go camping, I always bring our water filter jug so we can enjoy clean, filtered water wherever we are. We start by filling a large container with tap water, then use the jug to filter what we need for drinking, tea, and coffee. The rest is great for things like washing up or rinsing off sandy feet, especially when we’re camping near the beach!

We’ve been using Waters Co Water Filters for years and absolutely love them. They remove chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals, fluoride, and other nasties, making our water cleaner, safer, and better tasting. They also alkalise the water and add back essential minerals like magnesium and calcium for better hydration. I also think they’re really well-priced. If a larger bench top filter isn’t in your budget just yet, this jug is an amazing place to start.

If you would love to try these out, you can use my discount code ‘JORDIEPIE7’ for a discount on any of their water filters.

PACK YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLE SUPPLEMENTS

Whenever I travel, whether it’s overseas, camping, or just a week away, I love to simplify my supplement routine. The last thing I want is to lug around 10 different bottles! That’s why I stick to my top three must-haves, the ones I don’t want to go without. Everything else? I can easily take a break from for a little while.

ORGANIC LIVER & SPLEEN CAPSULES
Do you ever feel extra exhausted on holidays or camping ? I swear, as soon as I slow down, my body fully enters “rest mode,” and suddenly, I’m wiped. That’s why I always support my energy levels with Cell Squared’s Organic Liver + Spleen Capsules (use “JORDIE10” with Cell Squared for 10% off) because no one wants to feel run-down when they should be enjoying every moment.

Liver is already one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there, but did you know beef spleen is even richer in bioavailable heme iron? Unlike the non-heme iron found in plant foods, heme iron is much easier for your body to absorb, making it a game changer for energy levels! Just six capsules give me 78% of my RDI (9.4mg) of this highly absorbable iron. And let’s not forget the powerhouse benefits of beef liver. It’s packed with vitamins A, B2, B3, B5, B12, plus iron, copper, zinc, and more to support mood, immunity, hormones, mental clarity, and natural energy. When I’m traveling, I never leave home without these, they help keep fatigue at bay so I can actually enjoy my holiday (without needing another one to recover!).

CHARCOAL CAPSULES
Activated Charcoal deserves a spot in your wellness toolkit, it’s like a magnet for toxins! It binds to environmental pollutants like mould, harmful metabolites, and inflammatory compounds in the gut. If you’ve ever had food poisoning or accidentally eaten gluten (if you’re sensitive), this is a game-changer! Activated charcoal can capture, bind, and remove up to 100 times its own weight in toxins! It’s one of the quickest and easiest ways to support your body’s detox pathways—especially when traveling or camping, when we tend to eat and drink a little more than usual.

It can also help with;

  • Easing painful gas and bloating + settle the stomach and reduce nausea and generally easing discomfort.

  • I take it before bed if I’ve had a glass of wine, especially if it’s not preservative-free.

  • It’s my go-to for inflammation symptoms like migraines, headaches, itchy skin, or hormonal discomfort.

For travel, I prefer these activated charcoal capsules they’re convenient and mess-free. But if swallowing capsules isn’t your thing, charcoal powder mixed into water works just as well!

You can grab both through Jivita and use my code "jordiepieface" for $15 off your first order (minimum spend $130).

MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is an absolute game-changer! It helps you feel more relaxed, sleep deeper, and supports a balanced stress response, so you’re not running on cortisol 24/7. It’s also a key player in immune health and can even ease muscle aches and fatigue. Oh, and if you’ve ever dealt with travel-induced constipation (because let’s be real, it happens to the best of us), magnesium citrate can help get things moving again. It’s one of those nutrients that does so much for your body, yet so many of us don’t get enough of it!

The Ocean's Magnesium is one of my go-to brands. It’s a pure marine mineral powder (in capsule form) that delivers 382mg of bioavailable magnesium and 320mg of calcium per serve—sourced straight from the ocean. Because it comes in a glass jar, I just pop some of the capsules into a zip lock bag so I don’t have to pack the heavy jar.

I also love these Bioptimizers Magnesium Capsules - they contain all 7 forms of magnesium and their co-factors. I get these through Jivita, you can use my code "jordiepieface" for $15 off your first order (minimum spend $130).

MAKE THE BEST CHOICES WHEN EATING OUT

(without the stress of “perfection”)

Back when I was consulting with clients, I always told them: the worst thing you can put into your body is guilt. Eating out is part of the experience when traveling, and sometimes, you won’t have full control over your food choices, and that’s okay! Instead of stressing about making a "perfect" choice (because, let’s be real, there’s no such thing as perfect), focus on balance and truly enjoy both the meal and the moment.

That said, there are still simple ways to nourish your body while dining out: for example I’ll look for meals that are still made with fresh veggies, meat and healthy fats and customise my order when it’s needed. I’ll often check if something can be made gluten-free. At the end of the day, traveling is about experiencing—not stressing. Eating perfectly while traveling isn’t always realistic, and that’s okay! If I indulge in something outside my usual routine, I simply focus on making my next meal more nourishing. The key is to enjoy the experience, fuel my body the best I can, and not let food stress take away from the adventure.
